Tholey protects nature: Ten new sponsored trees on Schaumberg receive awards!
On June 8, 2025, ten more trees in the community forest around Schaumberg were recognized as “sponsor trees”. This project is carried out by the municipality of Tholey, NABU Saarland and proTerra GmbH as part of the NABU tree holder project. The long-term collaboration between the municipality and NABU Saarland aims to promote the protection of biological diversity, particularly through the preservation of certain tree species.
The trees in the project not only provide an important habitat for many animal and plant species, but also fulfill numerous ecological functions. These include water storage, carbon dioxide storage, humus formation and the role as a supplier of food and oxygen. NABU Saarland emphasizes the importance of old trees and their habitats, which are so important for up to 6,500 animal species and 1,600 fungal species valuablewald.nabu-saar.de.
Trees as habitat
NABU has set itself the goal of selecting suitable trees and contacting the forest owners. If approved, a sponsor will be found for the tree who will pay a sum of 250 euros. This payment serves in part as compensation for the forest owner who forgoes felling the tree. In return, NABU undertakes to monitor and document the preservation of the sponsored trees over a period of 40 years. Each award-winning tree is provided with a plaque for identification.
With the newly awarded trees, a total of 93 trees on Schaumberg are now sponsor trees. Wolfgang Recktenwald, the councilor for the municipality of Tholey, emphasized the municipal council's unanimous support for the project. This initiative contributes to the preservation and strengthening of forests, which are considered the most valuable ecosystem in Germany and are home to great biological diversity.
Commitment to sustainable forest use
The tree preservation project is not only committed to preserving old trees, but also wants to make the use of forests sustainable. Trees are often harvested before they reach their natural age, although they can live up to 300 years, such as the beech, which is usually used commercially after 130 years. NABU Saarland's origin and education offensive aims to increase forest owners' awareness of the protection of their trees and the value of the entire ecosystem tholey.de.
proTerra GmbH, a team of over 20 consultants and environmental experts, has been supporting the project for years and has also taken on tree sponsorships at Schaumberg. Their joint commitment aims to preserve the forest in its diversity and function in the long term, in collaboration with the forest owners and the community of Tholey.
