Discovery tour to Liebenburg: Experience history up close!
On Sunday, June 22nd, at 4 p.m., an exciting discovery tour about the history of Liebenburg and the St. Wendeler Land will take place. The event, organized by the Namborn Local History and Tourist Association, the “Die Tafelrunde” association and the municipality of Namborn, invites those interested to go on a 90-minute journey into the past with the knights Baldemar von Odenbach and Ludwig von Sötern. This tour not only shows the impressive Liebenburg, but also addresses the important role the castle played in the region.
The Liebenburg is the largest attraction and the landmark of the municipality of Namborn. The core castle was built at the end of the 12th century by the Bishops of Verdun through the Counts of Castel. The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1220, when Bishop Jean d'Aprémont of Verdun established his feudal sovereignty over the Counts of Blieskastel and Zweibrücken. Over the centuries, the castle experienced numerous changes and challenges, including destruction during civil unrest around 1430 and later pledging to various knightly families.
Event details
Participation in the tour is free of charge and offers visitors the opportunity to delve deeply into the history and structural features of the castle. Access is via the B 41, exit Hofeld-Mauschbach. The guests drive through Hofeld to the street “Zur Burg” and reach the meeting point at the refuge. This event is an excellent way to gain historical insight into the region.
In the past, the Liebenburg has undergone several transformations. In 1414, Emperor Sigismund confirmed the ownership of the people of Trier, while the castle was finally destroyed in 1677. Reconstruction was never completed, resulting in the current ruin. It was only in the 1970s that foundation walls and artifacts were uncovered, including door fittings and coat of arms stones, which underline the relevance of the Liebenburg.
Current conservation measures and events
The community then took on the task of renovating the remains of the wall and revitalizing the castle grounds. Since then, guided tours have been offered regularly, led by “Ritter Ludwig von Sötern” and, by appointment, also by “Baldemar von Odenbach”. In addition, the community regularly hosts a knights' spectacle, which is organized together with the local history and tourism association and the medieval association “The Round Table”.
The Liebenburg is not only a historical monument, but is also a living part of cultural life in Namborn. The upcoming events are a wonderful opportunity to discover the history of the castle and the region and to engage with the remnants of a turbulent past.
