Pure drama: Heidenheim saves a draw against Elversberg in the relegation first leg!

In the first leg of the relegation to the Bundesliga, 1. FC Heidenheim and SV Elversberg met on May 23, 2025. The game ended in a thrilling 2-2 draw and offered the 15,000 spectators in the stadium an entertaining and offensive duel. Elversberg initially caused excitement as they led 2-0 at half-time. Lukas Petkov scored in the 18th minute, followed by Fisnik Asllani, who extended the lead in the 42nd minute, while Heidenheim missed several chances in the first half, including an offside goal from Omar Traoré in first-half stoppage time.

In the second half, Heidenheim came back strongly thanks to an increased offensive by coach Frank Schmidt. Tim Siersleben scored the next goal in the 62nd minute, followed by Mathias Honsak, who equalized just two minutes later. Léo Scienza, who came on as a half-time substitute, was instrumental in the comeback by assisting both of Heidenheim's goals. Elversberg had to warm up in the final phase as Heidenheim was getting closer and closer to the winning goal, but it failed to materialize.

Key players and decisive moments

The referee Sven Jablonski ensured an exciting game that ended with three minutes of added time. Heidenheim was superior in the first half, but was unable to capitalize on the lead of the stronger Elversberg team. Defender Muhammed Damar also had a great chance in the 48th minute, but it was missed. On the other hand, Elversberg was active with several top-class chances, underpinned to a certain extent by Zivzivadze's goal from the side net.

The second leg, which kicks off next Monday at 8:30 p.m., will be broadcast live on Sat.1 and Sky. Heidenheim goes into the decisive duel with a certain amount of momentum, despite the draw, as their return to the game has given them new confidence. Last season they were the weakest Bundesliga team in their own stadium, but could cause a surprise with a strong performance in the second leg. Heidenheim and Elversberg have already played against each other in the 3rd league in the past, and now the duel for promotion is on a completely different level.

Coach Frank Schmidt, who has been at Heidenheim for almost 18 years, will do everything he can to lead his team into the Bundesliga, while Horst Steffen von Elversberg, who has been on the sidelines for almost seven years, is also hoping for promotion. The two coaches have a lot of pressure because their respective clubs have to fight to stay or be promoted to the top German league.

The return to sport is eagerly awaited and fans of both teams have high hopes for the result, while Heidenheim goes into the second leg motivated after the strong comeback in the first leg.
