Goalkeeper Tobias Sippel says goodbye with a goal and a joke!
Tobias Sippel's last game of the season took place on June 12, 2025 at Borussia Mönchengladbach. In an entertaining final kick against district league team SV Glehn, Sippel made a remarkable promise: he wanted to score two goals. He came on in the second half and actually managed to score, fulfilling half of his promise. After the clear 14-2 win, Sippel joked about the man-marking he received from two players and then went on vacation. His contract with Gladbach expires on June 30, 2023, and a decision about his future is therefore up for grabs.
Tobias Sippel, an experienced goalkeeper, has had a long career that began in 1998 at 1. FC Kaiserslautern. He previously played for SV 1911 Bad Dürkheim. From the 2006/07 season he was part of the Kaiserländer professional squad. During this time he made a name for himself and was trained by Gerry Ehrmann, the goalkeeping coach, who also looked after well-known keepers such as Roman Weidenfeller and Tim Wiese. Sippel's first professional appearance took place on October 19, 2007 for Kaiserslautern against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.
Career highlights and challenges
During his time at Kaiserslautern, Sippel showed impressive performances that brought him numerous heights. He extended his contract in 2011 until 2013 and played a significant role in the Bundesliga promotion in 2010. However, his career was not without setbacks. Due to injuries and illnesses, he temporarily lost his regular place, but was always able to regain it.
In 2015, Sippel moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach, where he was hired as a substitute goalkeeper. He received a contract until June 30, 2018 and made his competitive debut on October 3, 2015 against VfL Wolfsburg. After contract extensions, his last engagement ran until June 2023. It is noteworthy that he made his first competitive appearance since March 2023 on matchday 23 of the 2024/25 season against FC Augsburg, which demonstrates his tenacity and insatiable ambition.
National team and outlook
During his career, Sippel was also able to recommend himself to the Germany U21 national team, where he made a total of nine appearances. He was even called up for a friendly with the senior national team, but was not used. This nomination shows recognition of his skills at a high level.
With his contract at Borussia Mönchengladbach expiring, big decisions now have to be made. Sippel's time in the Bundesliga could be coming to an end, and the footballer said goodbye to an uncertain future after the last game. Fans and officials will be waiting eagerly to see what decisions the experienced goalkeeper makes next.
