Wildlife Incidents in Mississippi

Of a total of 21 rhesus monkeys transported, 13 were discovered at the scene of the accident and finally reached their destination last week. Five monkeys had to be killed during the search, while three monkeys were still on the run as of Sunday. The Mississippi Highway Patrol is now investigating the exact circumstances of the accident. Sheriff Randy Johnson said Tulane officials assured them the monkeys were not infectious, despite initial warnings from the truck crew.

A similar incident occurred a year ago in which 43 rhesus monkeys escaped from a breeding facility in South Carolina because an employee did not properly lock an enclosure. Rhesus macaques are known for their aggressive behavior, experts point out, and typically weigh around 15 pounds (7.2 kilograms). However, health checks had confirmed that the affected monkeys were free of pathogens.
