Premiere of The Little Witch: Rain doesn't stop viewers!

On June 9, 2025, the play “The Little Witch” celebrated its eagerly awaited premiere at the Katzweiler open-air stage. Despite adverse weather conditions, including sudden rain, the audience did not let themselves be deterred from the performance and experienced an elaborate production based on the popular book by Otfried Preußler.

Marielle Anefeld shone in the leading role of the little witch, while Martin Scheidt's raven Abraxas interacted in a lively way with the children in the audience. Immediately after a magic number in which the little witch causes a thick cloud to appear in front of her witch's house, real rain followed - a quick interplay of reality and fantasy, which, however, did not dampen the audience's positive mood.

A spooky and beautiful witch's evening

“The Little Witch” tells the story of a 127-year-old witch who really wants to dance with the big witches on the Blocksberg on Walpurgis Night. However, she is actually too young for the dance and is caught and punished when she tries. To keep her chance at next year's dance, she must pass a test and become a good witch.

On the advice of her raven Abraxas, the little witch begins to help the people around her in order to gain a reputation as a good witch. But the road there is rocky: the next year she passes the test, but is classified as a bad witch by the weather witch Rumpumpel because she only did good things. Instead, she is punished by having to prepare the witch's fire for the evening dance.

An unexpected turning point

The little witch then wields her magical powers and takes revenge on the big witches by setting their witch brooms and witch books on fire. Their rebellious actions mean that from now on in the world of witches there are only those who cast good spells. This twist in the story generated feedback from audience members both young and old, who responded to the spectacle with applause and enthusiasm.

The production, directed by Michael Wilking, is considered a complete success and shows that even rain cannot dampen the magical atmosphere of a theater performance. With this piece, the Katzweiler open-air theater confirms its commitment to offering creative and entertaining leisure activities for the whole family.
