Last Sunday, the Iowa Hawkeyes had an impressive performance in Iowa City, where they defeated the St. Louis Billikens 3-0. That result marked St. Louis' worst loss since the 2021 season, when they fell 4-0 to Rutgers in the NCAA Tournament. The win for the Hawkeyes came after a disappointing 0-0 draw against Loyola-Chicago in which they failed to score despite controlling the game. Liana Tarasco, a freshman forward, spoke after the game about the significance of the win, which confirmed the team's identity. She mentioned that they deserved Thursday's win against Loyola. Against St. Louis, the Hawkeyes only needed one shot to score the first goal in the 5th minute through Tarasco, off a pass from Elle Wildman. Kelli McGroarty took a free kick in the 34th minute, which Kenzie Roling converted to make it 2-0. Eileen Solomon made the final score 3-0 in the 51st minute, while Iowa's defense was excellent in the second half and St. Louis only allowed five shots in the entire game.

Looking back at St. Louis' successes brings a long history in collegiate soccer into play. SLU has an impressive sports tradition in which the men's team has been active in NCAA Division I for over 60 years and has already won 10 national championships. The Billikens won the championship in the first NCAA Tournament, held in 1959, marking the beginning of a dominant period in men's soccer.
The men's soccer team's successes have been accompanied by numerous alumni over the years, including over 100 professional players and 50 All-Americans. Women's soccer was introduced at SLU in 1996 and has also achieved notable success in its first 25 years, including six NCAA Tournament appearances. Coach Katie Shields has made significant progress with her team since 2013, including winning the 2022 Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Championship.
