Kaiserslautern's Bruno Kurz: Rhineland-Palatinate's best reader for Berlin!
In the Rhineland-Palatinate reading competition, Bruno Kurz from the Ritterberg high school in Kaiserslautern won the state decision. He beat seven other participants and will represent his state at the national final on June 25th in Berlin. The competition, organized by the German Book Trade Association, sees promoting reading and engaging with children's and young people's literature as essential goals.
Over 500,000 students from more than 7,000 schools took part in the 2024/25 competition round across Germany. In Rhineland-Palatinate, 384 schools with over 33,600 children in the 6th grade took part, which secured the state second place in the ranking of all eligible schools. bm.rlp.de reports on the students' impressive love of reading and commitment.
The state decision
The state decision in Mainz was evaluated by a top-class jury, including Dr. Lothar Oebel from the Ministry of Education belonged. He commented positively on the children's enjoyment of reading. Other jury members were Léni Falkenstein, Eva Fauth, Kristina Niedermüller and Mareike Schneider. The jury had the difficult task of selecting the national winner from the talented readers.
Also important is the commitment of the initiative to promote reading in Rhineland-Palatinate, which includes programs and collaborations such as with the Reading Foundation and the “Kicken und Lese” project in collaboration with FSV Mainz 05.
A look at Berlin
The national final will bring together 16 state winners who will compete for the title of best reader in Germany. The final will be streamed live and is accessible via various media platforms such as rbb, KiKa and the ARD media library. The winner not only receives a challenge cup, but also a book check, a reading by a dream author at the school, as well as a book package for the school library and an invitation to the federal jury for the next round of the competition.
The organization of the competition extends from the announcement in September/October through the school decisions to the regional competitions, which lead to the national final in June. Participants are 6th grade students who engage intensively with stories and adventures.
