Hunters in turmoil: Break with the Greens affects the entire coalition!
The State Hunters' Day took place in Rhineland-Palatinate on May 23, 2025, at which the hunters expressed their dissatisfaction with current politics. Loud Stalk State hunter Mahr reported a break in relations with the Greens. This became particularly clear when the State Hunting Association (LJV) was denied seats at a parliamentary hearing on the grounds that the hall was full. However, it later emerged that there were still places available, increasing distrust of the current coalition.
Some LJV representatives were even “complemented out” during the meeting, further inflaming tensions. Mahr appealed to the hunters to bring their unease to Mainz. The aim is to shake up the coalition, with the SPD eyed as a key partner in the upcoming elections.
Growing dissatisfaction and strategic considerations
The discontent within the hunting community is a microcosmic example of the larger political currents in Germany. In the last state elections in East Germany, the AfD gained support, particularly among younger age groups. Many young people used to vote for progressive parties such as the Greens or the Left, but this trend has fundamentally changed. Currently, support for the AfD surpasses all other parties among young voters, such as the Federal Agency for Civic Education determines.
This tendency is not only limited to East Germany, but can also be seen in the European elections. Young people are experiencing crises and are pessimistic about Germany's future, which the AfD can use to its advantage. This party offers simple solutions to complex problems and focuses heavily on migration as a main issue.
Digital presence and future prospects
The AfD has massively expanded its presence on social media such as TikTok, which helps it to directly address young people in particular. Many young voters are increasingly finding out about politics on such platforms, which gives the AfD strategic advantages. Differences between East and West Germany were noticed. Many young East Germans feel disadvantaged compared to West Germany, which further encourages support for the AfD.
In contrast to the NPD in the 1990s, which was dominated by older men, the AfD presents itself as a young, modern movement that reacts to current social issues. In order to counteract these developments, established parties should rethink their strategies and be more present on social media in order to better reach and inform young people.
The situation within the hunting community and the AfD's influence on young voters illustrate the complexity of the current political landscape in Germany. It remains to be seen how these dynamics will impact the coming elections.
