Heat alarm in Rhineland-Palatinate: temperatures up to 38 degrees expected!
Rhineland-Palatinate is facing an extreme heat wave, which, according to the German Weather Service (DWD), is expected to begin next week. The forecast suggests temperatures of up to 38 degrees, with the highest values could be reached on Tuesday and Wednesday. The bitter temperatures on Monday are expected to be between 32 and 36 degrees, while it should not get cooler than 30 degrees in the higher altitudes. Nighttime temperatures of over 20 degrees are expected on Monday night, which could be considered tropical nights for many. The DWD warnings affect large parts of Germany, particularly the south and west of the country, including Rhineland-Palatinate, where health risks from the high temperature are also identified.
Sunny weather and low cloud cover are expected to continue on Tuesday. The temperatures could be between 33 and 38 degrees, although a maximum of 31 degrees should be reached in the higher altitudes. The nights in particular remain tropical and increase the risk of health problems. High temperatures of 34 to 38 degrees are forecast again for Wednesday, and cumulus clouds are expected to form, which could bring local showers or thunderstorms in the mountains.
Warnings and recommendations
The heat wave has already led to a warning from the DWD, which came into force in the early hours of Monday. This applies to large parts of the country and calls on the population to take special precautions. In addition to warning against extreme heat, the DWD urges people to drink plenty of fluids, avoid physical exertion and seek shady places. In Brandenburg, the Ministry of Health advocates that employers implement heat protection measures in the workplace to reduce health risks.
The heat wave is not just limited to Rhineland-Palatinate. A general increase in temperatures is being observed in Germany, with values of up to 39 degrees in individual regions. While temperatures of up to 35 degrees are expected in the south, only around 25 degrees can be expected in the north. Thunderstorms with heavy rain, hail and squalls could occur, particularly in the areas of the Black Forest and on the edge of the Alps, to ensure initial cooling.
Global weather situation
The heat wave in Germany is part of a larger pattern of extreme weather phenomena in Europe. Southern Europe is already affected by extreme temperatures, with values above 40 degrees recorded in Spain and an alert in Portugal. The rising temperatures and the associated drought also increase the risk of forest fires, especially in regions such as the northern half of Bavaria, parts of Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt and almost all of Baden-Württemberg.
Forecasts suggest a cold front could arrive in the northwest from Thursday, although progress is expected to be slow. A noticeable cooling is expected in the east and southeast of Germany by Friday at the latest. Despite these prospects, the heat wave remains the dominant issue in Rhineland-Palatinate and beyond.
