Günther Jauch: From TV star to winemaker – insights into his life!

Günther Jauch, the 68-year-old television presenter, is a defining figure on German television and has hosted the popular quiz show “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” for around 26 years. Aside from his involvement with RTL, Jauch has been running a winery in Kanzem, Rhineland-Palatinate, since 2010. Taking over the Othegraven winery was an important step for Jauch, as he wanted to protect it from being sold by the family. The property was originally sold to him by the previous heiress, to whom he has family connections.

Working at the winery is a “completely new world” for Jauch. He describes the various tasks he takes on there, from maintaining the park to communicating with employees. Jauch and his wife Thea spend an average of a week at the winery every month, while Potsdam remains their headquarters. There are currently no plans to move to Rhineland-Palatinate as Jauch remains heavily involved in his TV work.

Current challenges and successes

Günther Jauch is not a fan of “doing nothing” and is not planning any changes in his life. He finds the idea of a life without active work to be wrong. Despite various challenges, such as floods and frost damage, which caused significant crop losses in 2024, Jauch has modernized the winery. Under his leadership, the Othegraven winery even received the title “Winemaker of the Year” twice – in 2023 and 2025.

Another problem that worries him is the drought and lack of water, which particularly affects the young vines. Jauch describes himself as a “perpetual winemaker trainee” and cannot interfere in the cellar master’s work. But he appreciates the solidarity and direct interaction in the winemaking community, which sets him apart from the television industry.

A look into the future

There is currently no end to Jauch's career in sight. However, his goal is to find the right time to retire. It is important to him that the audience regrets his absence before he takes this step. While he continues to actively play “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” moderated, he also enjoys quiet moments on the terrace of his winery or while reading biographies.

The commitment and passion for wine production show that Jauch is far from thinking about quitting. The bottom line is that he remains a character who sets standards both on television and in winemaking and is constantly looking for new challenges. A complete withdrawal therefore seems to be a long way off.
