Bollinger wants to become the AfD's top candidate: A power play in Rhineland-Palatinate!

Jan Bollinger, AfD party and parliamentary group leader in Rhineland-Palatinate, has expressed his ambitions to become his party's top candidate in the 2026 state elections. On June 14, 2025, the AfD will draw up its state list at the party conference in Idar-Oberstein. So far there is no opponent for Bollinger, which significantly increases his chances of getting the nomination. His goal is clear: he wants to become Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate after the election.

Current surveys support Bollinger's ambitions. In a survey by the SWR political magazine “On the Matter of Rhineland-Palatinate!” The AfD achieved an approval rating of 17 percent. The party currently has 6 out of 101 seats in the state parliament. In the 2021 state elections, the AfD received 8.3 percent of the votes and had 9 representatives.

Party conference in Idar-Oberstein

The upcoming party conference in the exhibition halls of Idar-Oberstein has mobilized a large number of participants. Almost 600 AfD members who are eligible to vote have registered to set the course for the coming elections. The entire (remaining) faction of the AfD in the state parliament plans to run again.

However, there are also critical voices in the party. Some members are being targeted by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution because of extreme right-wing activities. Among the most prominent actors in the AfD are Michael Frisch and Alice Weidel, who play an important role within the party.

With the aim of consolidating and possibly expanding the AfD's position in the state parliament, Bollinger's foray into the political landscape of Rhineland-Palatinate is a significant step. The outcome of the state election on March 22, 2026 will be crucial for the future of the party and whether Bollinger can govern at the top.
