InterNations recently published the “Expat City Ranking 2024”, which is based on an extensive survey. 12,500 emigrants from 175 nations took part in this survey. The cities are rated in various categories, including “Culture & Welcome”, “Friendliness of the Locals” and “Making Friends”.
Luxembourg's position in the ranking
In this survey, Luxembourg ranks 39th out of 53 destinations examined in the “Ease of Settling In Index”. According to the results, Luxembourg ranks 41st in the “Culture and Welcome” subcategory and also ranks 41st in the “Making Friends” category. The country ranks 33rd in the “Friendliness of Locals” category.
In comparison, it shows that cities in Germany such as Düsseldorf, Cologne, Frankfurt, Berlin, Hamburg and Munich perform worse than Luxembourg. Düsseldorf takes 41st place, while Munich is at the bottom of the ranking and takes 53rd place. Munich also achieved the worst results in the “Culture and Welcome” category.

International comparisons
The practices and experiences of immigrants meet different criteria, which are also listed in the survey. In addition to the friendliness of the locals, the “Ease of Settling In Index” is made up of the subcategories “Finding Friends”, “Culture & Welcome” and “Local Friendliness”. While Costa Rica takes the top spot in the index, 88% of expats feel welcome there, which is in stark contrast to the experience in countries like Kuwait, which comes in last.
The international assessment shows that the majority of emigrants in countries such as Mexico and Costa Rica achieve high satisfaction ratings. These country comparisons make it clear that not only the local conditions, but also the social environment have a significant influence on the well-being of expats.
Although Luxembourg performs acceptably, InterNations' results show that there is still room for improvement, particularly in terms of social contacts and cultural outreach.
