Historic trade union front: Thousands demonstrate on June 28th!
On Saturday June 28th, Luxembourg is facing a massive demonstration organized by the country's two largest unions, OGBL and LCGB. Under the motto “historic trade union front”, the unions are calling on their members to take part in the protest march in large numbers. The Aleba banking union also joins this important event, as do colleagues from the German unions IG Metall and NGG. This supra-regional mobilization shows solidarity and the common fight for workers' rights in the heart of Europe, reports Volksfreund.
The alliance between OGBL and LCGB is unprecedented. As part of the protests on June 28, both unions are calling together to defend the rights of workers, especially in the face of the "violent attacks" on workers' rights by the government and employers, as criticized by OGBL President Nora Back. This is the first time in the history of Luxembourg trade unions that these two organizations have publicly joined forces, marking a significant step in the labor movement, as RTL reports.
Demands and criticism
Both unions express sharp criticism of the political line of the CSV-DP coalition and of the Luxembourg Employers' Association (UEL). The unions' central demands include:
- Erhalt von Löhnen und Rentenrechten unter luxemburgischen Bedingungen.
- Gleichbehandlung von Bewohnern und Grenzgängern.
- Widerstand gegen flexiblere Arbeitszeiten und Sonntagsöffnungen.
- Unterstützung für 150 Mitarbeiter von Liberty Steel.
LCGB President Patrick Dury stresses that the government is seeking a “paradigm shift” in social values in favor of more flexible work and less protection for workers and speaks of unprecedented attacks on the Luxembourg system.
Visions and demands for social justice
Despite their collaboration, the union leaders share different geopolitical perspectives. Patrick Dury highlights the importance of European sovereignty, while Nora Back emphasizes the need for peace and diplomacy. It also makes it clear that no euro should be diverted from workers' families to private defense companies.
The upcoming demonstration on June 28th is a strong sign of unity and determination among workers in Luxembourg. The joint action will not only strengthen the unions, but also make the voice of workers heard in the country's political landscape, according to Volksfreund.
