Tholey will reduce daycare contributions from August – families can breathe a sigh of relief!

The municipality of Tholey is responding to the increasing demands on families and will be reducing parental contributions for five of its childcare facilities from August 2023. Affected facilities are the kindergartens “Zwergenburg” in Sotzweiler, “Zauberwald” in Theley, “Sonnenschein” in Tholey and the “Villa Wusel” in Überroth-Niederhofen.

The local council made the decision unanimously. Mayor Andreas Maldener emphasizes that this measure implements the regulation of the Saarland Education, Upbringing and Care Act. From August 1, 2023, the parents' share of the personnel costs for the daycare centers will fall to 10 percent, compared to 25 percent in 2019.

Details about the new posts

The new monthly contributions, effective from August 1, 2023, are as follows:

Furnishings Old contribution (Euro) New contribution (Euro)
RuleKiGa 48.00 36.00
Full day KiGa 110.00 83.00
Full-day KiGa “expanded” 125.00 94.00
Nativity scene (5 days) 147.00 110.00
Nativity scene (3 days) 118.00 89.00

This adjustment is part of a broader initiative aimed at reducing the financial barriers to attending daycare and relieving the burden on families. According to the Saarland Ministry of Education and Culture (MBK), the complete reduction in daycare parent contributions will be carried out gradually by January 1, 2027. This will happen in several stages in which contributions will continue to fall in the coming years.

Long-term perspectives

In April 2024, the Saarland state parliament passed the no-contribution daycare law, which includes the complete reduction of parental contributions. In four steps, the parents' share of personnel costs will be gradually reduced to 0 percent by 2027. While parental contributions amounted to 25 percent of personnel costs in 2019, they are currently only 7.5 percent.

The initiative to reduce contributions will not only benefit families. The MBK estimates an annual relief of around 13 million euros, which can be reinvested in the expansion of daycare places. These measures are intended to ensure that access to early childhood education is improved for all families in Saarland.

Overall, with this gradual reduction in parental contributions, Tholey shows that the community is striving to strengthen the educational infrastructure and support families in the region. From 2027 onwards, there will be complete exemption from contributions, which should represent considerable financial relief for parents, especially for families with several children.
