Heidenheim secures Bundesliga place with dramatic stoppage time goal!

1. FC Heidenheim secured the last free place in the Bundesliga in an exciting relegation second leg against SV Elversberg. The outcome of the game, which took place in front of 9,200 spectators in the sold-out Kaiserlinde stadium, was fiercely contested. Heidenheim won the decisive duel 2-1 and can therefore play in the elite class of German football next season. With an overall result of 4:3, Heidenheim secured relegation after the first leg ended 2:2.

In the 9th minute, Mathias Honsak gave Heidenheim the lead. He benefited from a precise pass from Leonardo Scienza, which proved to be decisive. In the 31st minute, Robin Fellhauer equalized for the guests after Tom Zimmerschied passed him the ball. This added extra tension to the game as both teams needed a win to achieve promotion.

Intensity and drama in the second half

In the second half, SV Elversberg increasingly pushed for the second goal in order to preserve their chances of promotion. But despite good approaches and a strong performance, including from Carlo Sickinger, the Elversberg team failed to score any further goals. A goal from Fisnik Asllani was disallowed in the 47th minute due to an offside decision. Heidenheim was more dangerous on the counterattack and could have provided clarity early on with further chances, including from Luca Kerber.

The highlight of the game came in stoppage time: In the 90th + 5th minute, Leonardo Scienza scored the decisive goal for Heidenheim, which sent the stadium into celebration. Scienza was not only a goalscorer, but also played a key role in shaping the game. He was involved in the most shots on goal (six) and made the most tackles (33) in the game. His outstanding speed also made him the fastest player on the pitch at 33.85 km/h.

Records and outlook

Heidenheim's victory has historical significance because since relegation was reintroduced in 2009, only three of 17 second division teams have been able to stay in the league. For SV Elversberg, under the leadership of head coach Horst Steffen and assistant coach Raphael Duarte, the dream of promotion ends after just one year in the second division. The last representative of Saarland in the Bundesliga was 1. FC Saarbrücken in the 1992/1993 season.

1. FC Heidenheim can now prepare for next season and set the course for a successful campaign in the Bundesliga. They have not only overcome relegation as a psychological hurdle, but also show that they have the potential to assert themselves in the top German football league.
