More sport in schools: SportBewegte SchuleSaar” takes off!

The need for more physical education lessons is becoming increasingly louder in Saarland schools. Many teachers and parents agree that the current regulation of just two hours of physical education per week is not enough to meet the physical, psychological and social needs of students. This opinion is also shared by the Saarland Ministry of Education and Culture, which confirms that more sport can be implemented in schools.

Against this background, the joint project “SportBewegte SchuleSaar” was launched. The partners in this ambitious project are the Ministry of Education, the State Sports Association for Saarland (LSVS) and the Ministry of the Interior, Building and Sport. The aim of the project is to strengthen physical education in a wide variety of school types and to promote a movement-oriented learning environment.

Diverse learning opportunities in physical education lessons

Physical education lessons not only provide physical exercise, but also support students in working together, regardless of their individual requirements. As the website of the Saarland Ministry of Education reports, physical education promotes sporting activity and enables a variety of experiences that contribute to holistic learning.

A particular focus is on promoting the swimming ability of primary school children through various concepts, including the school swimming pass, which documents swimming ability. Levels such as “Safe Swimming” are part of this program, which also contributes to safety in school sports.

Health and well-being through exercise

The importance of exercise, play and sport for the development of children and young people cannot be overestimated. The “SportBewegte SchuleSaar” seal of quality recognizes schools that successfully implement exercise-oriented and health-promoting programs. These schools actively contribute to improving the well-being of their students.

An example of such an educational institution is the Rotenbühl high school, which has been considered an “elite sports school” since 2005 and is particularly dedicated to promoting talent. Another notable project is “Golden Goal – Meeting Together”, which specifically promotes girls, especially those with a migrant background, in football and contributes to social integration.

The initiatives in Saarland show how important high-quality physical education is in order to strengthen not only the physical fitness but also the social skills of the students. Projects like “SportBewegte SchuleSaar” pave the way to a more active school time.
