Including Special Olympics 2025: Saarland is looking forward to 100,000 visitors!

Organizers of the Special Olympics in Saarland recently announced exciting details about the upcoming inclusive sports event at the sports campus in the Saarbrücken city forest. The event, which provides a platform for people with intellectual disabilities, will attract over 100,000 visitors, making it the largest sporting event in the region. All Saarland districts as well as neighboring Forbach with its Olympic swimming stadium are involved in the event, which is held in 27 sports, including badminton, bowling and cycling.

A total of around 13,000 participants are expected, including 4,000 athletes and their Unified Partners. In addition to the athletes, around 1,500 trainers and 2,500 helpers will also be on site, while a further 2,500 participants will take part in the so-called “non-competition offer”. Interior Minister Reinhold Jost (SPD) emphasizes the enormous importance of the competition and the positive effects for the entire region.

Promote inclusive encounters

SOD President Christiane Krajewski particularly emphasizes the opportunity to promote encounters between people with and without intellectual disabilities. The logo of the event, which shows the Saarbrücken Ludwigskirche, the Völklinger Hütte and the Saarpolygon, underlines the connection to the region.

Despite the positive aspects, there are still challenges to overcome. Some sports facilities used for the competitions are not yet accessible for disabled people. The State Sports Association for Saarland (LSVS) has taken over the organization, with Special Olympics Germany as the event organizer.

The Special Olympics in Saarland take place in nine cities. Participants can expect a diverse range of sports that not only promotes talented athletes, but also involves the entire community.
